Looking only at individual coin prices makes it easy to miss the big picture in crypto. Reading market cap together with Bitcoin dominance tells you whether money is flowing into or out of the market — and whether that money is going to Bitcoin or to altcoins.
What market cap is
Market cap is coin price × circulating supply. It captures the size of a single coin, and of the whole crypto market.
- When total market cap rises, money is flowing into the market broadly; when it falls, money is leaving.
- Price alone can mislead. A coin whose supply is rising fast (inflationary) can see its cap grow even if the price is flat.
What Bitcoin dominance is
Bitcoin dominance (BTC dominance) is Bitcoin's cap ÷ total crypto cap — the share of the whole market that Bitcoin makes up.
- When dominance rises, money is concentrating relatively into Bitcoin (a flight to safety, or a BTC-led rally).
- When dominance falls, money is spreading into altcoins (greater risk appetite).
Reading the regime with dominance
Combining total cap and dominance gives roughly four regimes:
- Total ↑ + dominance ↑: a Bitcoin-led bull market. New money flows mainly into BTC.
- Total ↑ + dominance ↓: money spreading into altcoins — the classic "alt season."
- Total ↓ + dominance ↑: risk-off. Money flees from alts into BTC.
- Total ↓ + dominance ↓: a broad decline. Alts fall more than BTC.
What "altcoin season" means — and its limits
When dominance drops and altcoins outpace Bitcoin, people often call it "alt season." But that is a description after the fact, not a prediction. Altcoins carry far more volatility and risk, and thin-liquidity coins easily crash after a spike. Falling dominance is not a signal to "buy alts."
How to read it
- Use cap, not price. To gauge changes in market size, look at market cap.
- Total cap + dominance together. Only by combining the two can you see the direction of flows.
- Pair it with sentiment. Read alongside the fear & greed index to gauge euphoria or fear.
Indicators worth watching alongside
Dominance reads more richly with total market cap, the crypto fear & greed index, and derivatives metrics (funding, open interest).
